Formed in 2000 in Germany, The Ocean, one of the confirmed names for Bangers Open Air 2027, has built its own identity by combining post-metal, prog, and sludge metal, alternating atmospheric passages, dynamic shifts, and moments of great sonic intensity. Led by guitarist and founder Robin Staps, the group stands out for its elaborate compositions and conceptual approach, which explores scientific, philosophical, and natural history-related themes.
Throughout their career, the group has released important albums for the consolidation of their identity, such as "Precambrian" (2007), "Heliocentric" (2010), "Pelagial" (2013), and "Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic" (2018). The conceptual sequence continued with "Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic" (2020) and "Holocene" (2023), works that explore different periods of Earth's history and expand the group's sonic possibilities.
Their international trajectory includes performances at festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Hellfest, in addition to tours alongside bands like Mastodon, Opeth, and Katatonia. Recognized for the intensity of their performances and the combination of heaviness and experimentation, The Ocean has developed a sound that transitions between hard-hitting riffs, extensive instrumental passages, atmospheric textures, and electronic elements.
The current phase is marked by "Solaris", released in 2026 and inspired by the universe of filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky. The work represents a new creative stage, with significant changes in the lineup and the participation of two vocalists, Lane Shi and Enrico Tiberi. Recorded in Berlin, the record expands the group's progressive and atmospheric approach, incorporating new textures and exploring contrasts between contemplative moments and explosions of heaviness.
Besides founder Robin Staps (guitar), the current lineup brings together Mattias Hägerstrand (bass), Jordi Farré (drums), Lane Shi and Enrico Tiberi (vocals), and Emmanuel Jessua and Marco Gennaro (guitars). At Bangers Open Air 2027, The Ocean will bring to the Brazilian audience—which they met when they came for the first time in 2006—a sonic experience that combines aggressiveness, experimentation, and immersive atmospheres, reaffirming their position among the most unique names in contemporary progressive metal.
